I still have some minor finishing touches to do but basically it's now finished - about six months later. The size is about 39" x 50" and I'll have further details soon.

Silver Landscape

"Fire and Ice" is a powerful visual that surely conveys the release of energy of the fabrics I've used here. One of my goals in my creative process has been to really be able let the fabrics talk. Couple that with a strong design and I think it's a very successful piece, for me anyway!

Fire and Ice 48" x 46"

detail

The background fabric is one of my handpainted fabrics in cool blues and metallic fuchsia. The flames are a Marimekko cool yellow cotton with silver specked white tulle behind them. The castles are of various commercial fabrics in blues with a silver background just shining through. The streets and ladders are a crazy fabric with optical illusion checkered black and white squares outlined with metallic silver thread. Below the icicles is a gorgeous silver with the same silver specked white tulle also making up more icicles.

I handpainted the background in a lime green with yellow and purple highlights. I then took more purple and made large brushstrokes in a soft, wavy design. I had no idea what I was going to do with this fabric panel but I took it with me on my vacation to Finland. But I ran into a great arts & crafts store in my hometown Vasa, and found the fun ribbons and beads so then it was just experimenting with some colors. There's a fair amount of hand-stitching along with some decorative machine embroidery. All adds up to a very textural, decorative wall hanging with tons of texture and fun!

earthy ethics

detail1

Earthy Ethnics 21" x 27.5

"Earthy Ethnics" is an art piece in very earthy color tones, colors I don't work in very often. It's an abstract design but I used some traditional techniques in cutting the pieces and then reassembling them into new blocks. The design elements are gently flowing across the surface thanks to the beads I sewed onto the surface which connect the block elements in new visual patterns. Simple machine stitching emphasizes some of the graphic lines in the overall design. It's one of my many experimentations with surface design using beads to add texture as well as visual impact to a textile art piece.

It is a very graphic and bold original design that makes a strong visual impact in any setting - modern, eclectic or even in a traditional decor.

strings

Strings 22" x 24"

Another one of my wholecloth fabric backgrounds machine stitched with decorative multi-colored yarns is this one which I call "Strings". The strings are colored ribbons hand quilted with a variety of glass beads. I really love these colors and it was a delight to translate my inspiration from the scientific "string theory" into a colorful and dynamic art quilt.

silver organisms

Silver Organisms 28" x 24"

Another strong graphic abstract is this one I call "Silver Organisms". It's hard to put into words how satisfying it is to manifest something original out of an idea, a simple sketch, then play with the fabrics until you find the right one, think about which sewing, piecing and embellishment techniques to use, then get to work! When I found the silver fabric I knew I had a winner!

hippo sculpture

Happy Hippo

I bet you're wondering what this odd -sized and odd -shaped creature is? No, you can tell I'm a Hippo of some kind?  Well, it doesn't matter to me that I'm unusual, I'm a Happy Hippo! I love myself the way I am and I love dressing up in laces and yarns and glitter – all these things make me special!  So far, I'm the only hippo of this kind, part sculpture, part pillow, part decoration – do what you want with me...just smile when you look at me and I'll be a Happy Hippo forever!

Stella R. Starr

My name is Stella R. Starr and I'm a galactic star – from way out in outer space, too far for you earthlings to fathom. On the way here I picked up some stardust and some little space icicles and I just let them engulf me in any way they wanted.  I know I'm special, I'm one-of-a-kind in the way I look and the way I bring you joy and creativity.  There are many, many more stars out there in the Universe but I doubt that you'll ever find or see another just like me.

I hope I can come to your home and visit, maybe become a topic for a conversation or two???  Enjoy!

Penguin Bride

I'm a Penguin Bride – I bet you've never seen or heard of such a creature!  Well, I was created out of odd shapes of fabrics and so my shape is a little odd as well.  But I'm a happy Penguin and I make people laugh! I'm getting married soon, I hope, but I really don't have a beau yet – would you like to be mine?  That way, I can go home with you right away and we can live happily ever after!
